On Thursday, actu.fr reported a disturbing incident involving Daniel Congré, a former French football defender. He was discovered in an unconscious state at his residence in Pérols, suffering from severe stab injuries close to his heart. Shortly after, Midi Libre confirmed Congré’s identity as the person involved. He is currently employed as the sporting coordinator at Lyon.
Following these revelations, the public prosecutor in Montpellier clarified that the case was not an act of violence, but rather an attempted suicide. Congré is now being treated at Montpellier University Hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable.
Daniel Congré’s football career was entirely based in France, where he was mostly positioned as a central defender, though he had the versatility to play across all defensive roles. He emerged from Toulouse’s youth system and moved to Montpellier in 2012. Over nine years, he established himself as a legendary figure for the club before leaving in 2021. Congré played his final football years at Dijon until his retirement. He took on his current role at Lyon in October 2024 as their sporting coordinator.
